Humanitarian Laws

This is the body of laws that concern with the humane conduct of war between nations (international conflicts) or between warring groups within a country itself (internal conflicts). It makes a very clear distinction between armed combatants and civilians caught in the crossfire. It further provides precise rules of conduct for belligerent nations (countries at war), neutral nations and the personal command responsibility of certain individuals in the conflict itself. This is to make rules clear about what to do with wounded soldiers, sick combatants and shipwrecked sailors at sea including the treatment of prisoners of war. Its whole intent is to lessen the savagery and cruelty of war and give quarter to enemies (leniency to defeated armies). It is also known as the law of armed conflict. The recently-recognized crime of genocide is considered to be against conventional and customary international humanitarian law and is a crime against humanity.
